Pack 75 Pinewood Derby

As suggested by the Cub Scout Leader How-To Book & the Cub Scout Grand Prix Pinewood Derby Guide

The Pinewood Derby is open to all Cub Scouts and can be an excellent learning experience.  It requires planning and participation, involves competition and recognition.  Boys should build their own racers with guidance and minimal assistance from an adult.  Any technical assistance should be fully explained to the Cub Scout so that he can use that knowledge on future projects.  Always remember that in Cub Scouting, it is more important to “Do Your Best” than to come in first.  Emphasizing winning too much can demoralize a young Cub Scout who does his best but doesn’t win.  All participants will be recognized for their effort.

The Rules:

1)       All cars must pass inspection to qualify for the race.  The inspection points are as follows:

a)      The car must have been made during the current year (the year in which the derby is held).

b)      The width of the car (including the wheels) shall not exceed 2 ¾ inches.

c)      The length of the car shall not exceed 7 inches.

d)      The weight of the car shall not exceed 5 ounces.

e)      The height of the car shall not exceed 3 inches. (This is to fit under the finish line judge)

f)       Axles, wheels and body wood shall be as provided in the kit.  Only official BSA wheels are acceptable.

g)      Wheel bearings, washers, and bushings are prohibited.

h)      The car shall not ride on any kind or type of springs.

i)        Any details added must be within length, width and weight limits.

j)        The car must be freewheeling, with no starting devices.

k)      No loose materials of any kind (such as lead shot) are allowed in the car.

l)        Only dry lubricant (such as graphite) is permitted.

2)       If, at registration, a car does not pass inspection, the owner will be informed of the reason for failure, and will be given time within the official weigh-in time period to make the adjustment. After final approval, cars will not be re-inspected unless the car is damaged in handling or in a race.

3)       The starter(s) will make sure the cars are on the track properly and then will start the race.

4)       If a car leaves the track, runs out of its lane, interferes with another car, loses an axle, etc. the heat will be re-run.  If the same car gets into trouble on the second run the car is disqualified and automatically loses that race.  If on the second run, another car is interfered with, the heat will be run a third time but without the disqualified car.

5)       Awards will be given for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for each den, as well as overall 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the Pack.  All participants will be recognized.  We will also have an award for the “Most Original” vehicle.

6)       Judges’ decisions are final.
